这120所社区学院中的赢家代表了全美国多达1200所社区学院中的的10%。在经济衰退中，数百万学生集聚到过分拥挤的社区学院，但这些学院在使学生顺利毕业上乏善可陈。全职社区学院学生中，3年中获得相关的2年制学位的学生还不到十分之三。被社区学院入取的学生中，不到一半的人将目标设在从社区学院毕业，然後转学至4年制大学，并在6年的时间内从4年制大学毕业。

　　进入社区大学的学生主体,是那些在高中没有学好基础数学和综合阅读技能的学生，进入社区学院之後上的是补习课,无法转成4年制大学的学分;上补习课也使学生获得准学士学位的进程减缓。
