他，让里约与新航道近在咫尺!

 

　　这几天，想必小伙伴们的朋友圈已经被里约奥运会的开幕式以及各项赛事刷屏了~做为主办国，巴西的确用开幕式给我们带来了一场为之正名的视觉盛宴!

　　在开幕式这样一个对巴西人来说非常重要的日子里，身在两国的他们，却共同分享了这段令人激动的时刻。

　　I'm not a big fan of sports. Today (Saturday morning in Beijing, Friday night in Rio) was the opening of the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

　　I was woken up by my phone ringing. It was my mom. It reminded me that she was at the actual Maracanã stadium where the opening was taking place. She had called several times in a row, so I was a bit worried that something might have happened.

　　When we finally connected (connection over there wasn't great because of the crowd) she said: "What a pity you're not here, I wish we were all spending this moment together."

　　We couldn't keep the call going because of the bad connection. So I texted her saying I'd find some way of watching it from over here.

　　In my rented flat here in the West side of Beijing (China's top education and startup hub), there's an average sized TV which I kept stored in the corner of the living room. I had never used it since I moved in two years ago.

　　I plugged it in and it automatically switched on to CCTV1, which was covering the opening ceremony.

　　The different country delegations were parading through in alphabetical order. When I started watching, it was already the turn of Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zambia.. and I realised I had missed most of the 100+ countries that had already gone through. To my surprise, the Refugee's delegation and Brazil's delegation went through in the end. So that was worth it.

　　Also, luckily some of my Chinese friends on Wechat had sent me some 'sights' (short clips) of what they had just watched, so that compensated a bit too.

　　My mom calls again. She's already on the subway on her way back home (this was the third time in her life that she was using the almost 30 year-old, two-line subway system in Rio. First time was at the inauguration of the line, second time during the World Cup).

　　She had left the ceremony a bit early as she was worried about the crowds that would have to exit the stadium at the same time.

　　Since she was curious of what was still happening at the ongoing opening ceremony, I used our videocall to show her what was on TV. I caught myself simultaneously translating the opening speeches that the CCTV1 narrator was translating from Portuguese to Chinese, back to Portuguese.

　　The connection from the Rio subway was pretty good actually (a luxury I didn't have while living in London or Boston. Common-place all over China though.)

　　It was still worth it for her, because the last scene of the giant torch being raised surrounded by a reflective art piece created an otherworldly effect of fire and water.

　　So this is how my mom, only a few meters away from the Rio Olympic stadium (which still contained her empty seat) watched the second half of the opening ceremony: through a videocall with her son, translating the Chinese CCTV1 coverage from Beijing.

　　Curious to think that if I had moved here a few years earlier, we could have done this the other way around.

　　马赛龙出生于巴西，他的家庭用语是英语和葡萄牙语，父亲和母亲都能讲5门语言。受父母的影响，马赛龙对语言非常感兴趣，现在的他可以讲7国语言。

　　大学毕业后，马赛龙进入瑞士银行伦敦投行部工作了5年，后来辞职去麻省理工学院读MBA，主攻教育技术方向。马赛龙说，麻省理工有很多创新性的语言学习理念和方法。他很看好教育在中国的发展，于是去年来到了中国，“我来中国不仅仅是做老师，也会做教育产品。”

　　马赛龙说，他在麻省理工读书时，遇到过很多中国留学生，他发现中国学生的挑战主要在语言上，“中国学生成绩好，但不知道怎么使用语言，所以课堂的参与度不高。我想让中国的学生融入国外的课堂，了解英美的文化。很多来中国的外教，他们带着自己的教育背景和经历，可以带给学生思维上的变化。”
