Task1: driving license application at the US.

Task2Economic progress is one way to measure the success of one country, while some people think there are other factors. What other factors should be considered? Within these factors, do you think anyone is more important than the others?

Task 1 by Zee

The process to obtain a drivers license in the United States requires new drivers to follow a relatively simple process. The applicant must always began by visiting a test center and filling out an application. After that, they must take and pass an eye exam. Should they fail that exam, the process to obtain a license will be stopped and they will not be able to process any further. Should they pass the eye exam, they would then pay a fee and take the written component of the license exam. If the candidate passes the written part of the exam, they process to the driving test. If they pass the driving test, they have successfully completed the process and they will be given a drivers license. If they fail the written exam, they can take it over up to two times. If they fail the written part more than two times, they must pay the same fee as they did previous in the process and apply to take the exam again. If they pass the written part, they then move on to the driving test.

Task 1 by Peter

In order to get your license first you need to set up an appointment to visit the driving center. There are several steps needed to complete this process. The primary step is to complete the application properly and then take an eye test. If by some chance you fail the eye exam, then you are ineligible to receive a license. For those who pass the eye exam then you move on to the next step in the process which is to pay all necessary fees. Once you have properly paid the fees you then move on to the written portion of the driver’s test. You have a chance to take this exam three times in order to pass it (if for some reason you cannot pass the exam after three attempts, then you must begin the process again and pay all fees again) for those who are fortunate enough to pass the written exam, then you move on to the actual behind the wheel test. If for some reason your effort was less than acceptable you would need to begin the process of obtaining your license all over again; however, the more skillful of the lot that pass can celebrate with their new license and drive off victorious into the sunset.

Task 2 by Zee

Whether we view it as a good thing or bad thing, money and resources are imperative to the function and development of any country. A nations ability to provide its citizens a clean, safe and comfortable life are typically how we assess how well it is doing. With that said, there are many other factors to consider as we measure the accomplishments of individuals nations. Perhaps the idea is rather complex but, simply stated, while countries function largely through the assistance of money and economic development, there will likely be others areas of progress as important to it.

When considering other factors to measure the success of a country, I believe we must also look at the infrastructure. We should question whether or not people have access to safe and well developed schools and hospitals. While infrastructure may not directly provide funds or co-relate to economic progress, weak and decaying social systems in the country can actually signal an economic decline in the future.

Also, it is important that we consider the structure of the government and legal system in each country. It is also wise that any functional nation have a fair and balanced legal system where citizens are equally represented and protected by the laws. A balanced legal system well typically reflect a harmonious relationship between the citizens and the government as well as agreeable interaction between different groups within the country.

While there are many factors to weigh when ascertaining the successes and achievements of a country, I think it is important that we consider many factors. A government is almost like a machine; it must function in rhythm or else stress on one component will lead to a breakdown. The success of a nation depends on many factors; its ability to trade and do business with other countries, human rights, an accessible education system. There are multiple factors to consider and I do not think we can intellectually consider solely one area when looking at such a thing.

Task 2 by Peter

It is irrefutable that economic progress is one yardstick of determining a country’s success, but there is a range of other non economic factors such as availability of nutrition, primary health care and literacy rate which can be used to judge the well being of a nation. This essay shall delve into all such factors and also pick out the most significant one.

Economic progress or, in other words, the GDP has traditionally been the benchmark for determining the growth of a country. The true measure of success, however, is to determine how much of this economic growth is reaching the weakest sections of the society. A successful measure of development should represent the life of an average person in a country. It should measure the quality of life of all citizens.

One important factor is the Primary Health Care. If people receive good healthcare at the primary level, they are happier. Their productivity of work increases and they lead a comfortable life. Another factor is the literacy rate. For example, a country like Cuba has low GDP but less than 1% of its population is illiterate. As a consequence there is less crime and hence people enjoy a peaceful existence.

Furthermore, the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is also an index of mapping the success. For instance, Costa Rica has a low GDP, but its people are considered to be the happiest in the world. This is perhaps because it ranks 5th in the world in the EPI.

To put in a nutshell, I pen down saying that Literacy Rate is the most important factor to measure the success of a nation. GDP is just a mathematical value and does not take into consideration many of the factors that affect a person’s well-being and thus a nation’s well being.

I’m quite the foodie but of all the foods I enjoy, I would have to say curry goat with rice and peas is my favorite dish. I know, it sounds like such a complicated dish but it’s really not. It’s bite sized pieces of goat meat seasoned with curry power and many other spices and simmered down to a stew. It’s typically served with white rice but I enjoy eating it with rice and peas. I usually eat this dish when I’m in my hometown, Queens. I have a favorite restaurant there named, ‘The Door’. Although I eat it all the time when I’m home, I have no idea how to prepare it so I eat there maybe once or twice a month. Although it’s a rather fancy eatery, I honest could care less about the décor. I place my order within seconds of sitting down, as I never deviate from this selection. Maybe it’s a bit of nostalgia or perhaps I’m just really greedy but whenever I eat this dish, I think of my best friends mom. She would always prepare this dish for us and we would share a big plate of it after school at least once a week. We were all a bit poor then so it was nice to have something so good and so filling, cooked with such love. Maybe it’s an excuse, as I ate it entirely too much at home but eating it makes me think of a simpler time.

Do you like cooking?

I really enjoy cooking. In fact, it’s one of my hobbies. It started as something that I began to do out of necessity but the older I’ve become, the less of a chore it seems to be. Now it almost feels like creating art or magic in a bowl or pan. I quite enjoy cooking.
Would you say that eating a healthy diet is important?
Most definitely. You know, it’s so easy to pick up a burger or fried chicken when you’re on the run .If done occasionally and in moderation it shouldn’t be a major problem  but it is important to pay attention to ones body and health for longevity and a carefree life.

Describe what you think is a healthy diet
I think a healthy diet includes many fruits and vegetables with some meat, not a lot. Perhaps a lot of grains and nuts as well. I think a healthy diet doesn’t include sugary drinks, processed foods and other junk food products.
Are there many vegetarians in [your country]
Not really although I think it’s become a trend with many young people. Americans like their meat and many people are accustomed to eating lots of meat typically with every meal. I guess that’s a tough habit to break but I think as people become more educated about the benefits of a meatless diet, they are switching over to a vegetarian lifestyle.

I had an unforgettable meal several years ago. My roommates and I decided to take a trip during our Mid-autumn Festival break. We decided to travel to the countryside. One of my roommates lives in the suburbs and the place of interest was near his parents’ home. It was the end of the summer and beginning of the autumn. It was not the season, but we could see the harvest beginning. We realized what green was like at that time. We rode our bikes for two hours, and we the we finally reached our destination. We were so exhausted and thirsty that we rested under an gingko tree. We scooped some water from the wooden vat which ran from a fresh water well that was buried deep within the earth, and that water was sweet and cool. The taste was much better than that of soft drinks. His parents said that the eggplant was fresh, and they cooked it without oil using an old family recipe that was past down from one generation to the next of the women in his family. When it was done, it was so fragrant and tasty. We finished it at one sitting. It was the first time that I enjoyed a meal like that. It still resonates to this very day as such a wonderful time of bonding.
