You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

The table below shows the cost of water in five Australian cities in 2004.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

City Usage charge per kilolitre

(up to 125kl) Usage charge per kilolitre

(over 125kl) Water bill per household

Adelaide $0.42 $1.0 $310

Brisbane $0.78 $0.78 $312

Melbourne $0.84 $0.84 $253

Perth $0.42 $1.5 $332

Sydney $0.98 $0.98 $319

Sample Answer:

The figure gives the information about how the water cost in five cities of Australia Year 2004 is compared.

考官很容易理解你的思路,并且站在你的角度去考虑问题) in 2004, water bill each household, the least of all items, (不要小看这个插入语,它可以让你的句式更为活泼,逻辑更为严谨,增加强调的意味,体现出你的语言水平)was 253 dollars in Melbourne, where the usage charge per kiloliter was 0.84 dollars, whether the total of water use was up to 125 kiloliter or over. The similar pattern was found in usage charge per kiloliter in Sydney and Brisbane, 0.98 dollars and 0.78 dollars respectively.(我还想向考生推荐这个词。 that of Adelaide, 0.42 dollars, was the same as that of Perth when the total is no more than 125 kiloliters, but once the total was beyond the limit, both increased to 1.0 and 1.5 dollars individually. The water bill per family in Perth, the top, was 332 dollars, but that in other three cities was nearly 310 dollars.

All in all, in many parts of Australia the water charge per kiloliter depends on the total of water use, while the pattern is not in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. And there is a big difference in (这是一个总结,与开头相呼应告诉考官你的英文功底是扎实的,不会写虎头蛇尾的文章)water cost per family in the five cities.

The diagram shows the stages in the process of making chocolate.(所有的小作文句话都要用一般现在时。

Chocolate comes from the cacao tree, which is grown in parts of South America, Africa and Indonesia.(开头不能一上来就直接介绍cacao tree,而是通过主题词chocolate引出,否则显得太唐突)

The tree produces large red pods which contain white cocoa beans.

流程图特点之4:使用一些表示顺序的连接词when the pods are ripe, they are harvested, the beans are removed and they are fermented for several days in large wooden boxes.(三个句子的并列:“句子A,句子B and 句子C”。)

During the fermenting process, the beans turn brown.

Next, the brown beans are spread in the sun to dry. They are then put in large sacks and transported by train or lorry. After this, the beans are taken to a chocolate factory where they are roasted in an oven at temperatures of between 250 and 350 degree Celsius.

After being roasted, the beans are crushed and the outer shell is removed. This part is not needed for making chocolate. Finally, the inner part of the bean is pressed and liquid chocolate is produced.

The process by which bricks are manufactured for the building industry can be outlined in seven consecutive steps. First the raw material, clay, which was just below the surface of soil in certain clay-rich areas has to be dug up by a digger.

Then the lumps of clay are placed on a metal grid in order to break up the big chunks of clay into much smaller areas, which fall through the metal grid onto a roller, whose motion further segregates the bits of clay. Sand and water are added to make a homogenous mixture, which is then either formed in moulds or cut into brick-shaped pieces by means of a wire cutter.

Those fresh bricks are then kept in a drying oven for at least 24 and a maximum of 48 hours, several dozens if not hundreds of bricks at a time. The dried bricks are then transferred to a so-called kiln, another type of high temperature oven. First they are kept at a moderate temperature of 200 ℃ -1300 ℃. This process is followed by cooling down the finished bricks for 48 to 72 hours in a cooling chamber.

Once the bricks have cooled down and have become hard, they get packaged and delivered to their final destination, be it a building site or storage.

(215 words)

Band 9

This response fully satisfies the requirements of the task. All key features of each stage of the process are appropriately and accurately presented. An excellent overview is given at the beginning of the response and this skilfully incorporates part of the rubric, changing the grammatical function, to give a brief summary of the whole process. The message is very easy to read, with seamless cohesion that attracts no attention. Paragraphing, linking and referencing are all skilfully managed. The language used is very fluent and sophisticated. A wide range of vocabulary and structures are used with full flexibility and accuracy. Only rare minor ‘slips’ can be found and these do not detract from the high rating.

The two maps show how M will be greatly changed.

Year 2000, a main road, from east to west, went through M and it intersected other two roads (One from Northeast to Southwest; the other from Northwest to Southeast) in the south. A railway crossed the main road in the West. There was an unused shoe factory and an unused X factory in the north of the main road in the east of railway. A garage was across the main road from the unused shoe factory. In the rest of M areas, there was grass.

On the other hand, until 2015, there will have been a shift. The original roads and railway will be removed and a walkway and an underground railway will be established. The former will be used to connect Sport Stadium and X building (the left) to Swimming Pool (the right), while the latter will link the two buildings to Athlete Accommodation. Old grassland will be replaced by gardens.

Overall, it is clear that there will be a great change of M, probably because a sport game will be held.

International travel is becoming cheaper, and countries are opening their doors to more and more tourists. Do the advantages of increased tourism outweigh its disadvantages?

Air travel combined with early retirement and people with money to spend has meant that more and more people can travel the world. Some countries, especially those with famous historical sights and beautiful natural scenery try to attract this large market. While there are some problems that can be caused with all this travel, generally it is a positive thing.

Firstly, consider that all these tourists mean money that governments are eager to tap into. For many countries, tourism is a big part of GDP and without it their economies would suffer. Foreign tourists bring important dollars to the service industry and lots of small shops and vendors.

Secondly, by encouraging tourism governments are promoting their cities and countries. In my country, China, for example, increased tourism and hosting the Olympics has changed people’s perception of our country. At the same time, tourism allows local people to gain exposure to people from other countries, which is also a good thing.

Of course it’s not always a perfect picture. Not all tourists have a good attitude and manners. And in some cases they may even have a negative influence on the local population. But these situations are not so common, and embassies can create tough guidelines for getting a visa. This seems like a reasonable compromise.

To conclude, international travel is a great thing, but it is a privilege that should not be abused. Governments should encourage it, but also put in place measures to keep dangerous people away. This will result in a win-win situation for everyone.(251 words)

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Some parents would like choosing a career for their children, what is your opinion about this? Why?

You should write at least 250 words.

You should use your own ideas of knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Parents generally believe it is their responsibility to plan the careers for their children. They claim that they know their children well enough to decide what kind of job suits them. Hoping that their children will go in for professions that will bring them the greatest prestige and economic benefit, many parents think that their children are too young to see this for themselves. There are some parents who even expect their children to take over the careers of their fathers. For these reasons, many parents insist that theirchildren should obey them in choosing careers.

But many children suggest that they should be left free to choose their own careers. For one thing, parents and children may not share the same interest. A job that appeals is likely to be boring for their children. For another, children have been brought up in a different age from their parents’, and therefore, should be allowed to cultivate a spirit of independence and self-reliance. In short, children should be free to make their own decisions as to future careers.

In my opinion, in this case as in many other things, mutual understanding is important. On the one hand, parents’ view does reflect theirconcern for the well-being of their children. On the other hand, after all it is the children who will be doing the jobs. Therefore, it will be wise for parents to give them this freedom while for the children they should consult their parents when it is necessary. (249 words).

Some people think the government should spend more money on public services rather than wasting money on art.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

(1) With the development of modern society, governments are allocating more funds to building art galleries, theatres or supporting the life and work of artists. Some people disapprove the governments’ decisions and insist that the money should be spent on public services to improve people’s living standard in a more direct way. In my view, however, although funding public services is essential to social development, art is also an indispensable part of the society that should be valued.

(2) It is true that establishing public services is the top priority of the government. It provides for basic human needs and guarantees the stability of the society. In China, people have been relying on public services since the day of birth. They receive education in schools founded and supported by the government. When they are sick, the government helps paying for the medical care. Besides, everybody enjoys the public facilities like highways, parks, libraries and so forth which all come from government investments.

(3) However, this does not mean that the government spending money on art is unnecessary. Although people do not feed on art, it is still their natural instinct to pursue beauty. Once the survival needs are met, people start seeking spiritual fulfillments by creating and appreciating art, which helps them to calm down and relax after long hours of labor. Naturally, apart from bread and milk, the government should also take care of the spiritual life of common people.

(4) Admittedly, with successful commercialised operation, many art groups perform well and do not need the financial support from the government. Yet, there are still ones that depend on government funding. For example, Peking Opera, which is a valuable cultural inheritance of China, might not have survived and thrived without the promotion by the government. It is the same with many other art forms of art all over the world.

(5) In conclusion, it is the government’s duty to facilitate public services that provide for the basic needs of citizens. Nevertheless, art is also an important part of human life and deserves equal attention and support from the government.

1. public service

Economic progress is one way to measure a country's success. But some people think other factors are also important.

What are the other factors?

Which factor is the most important one?

(1) As a key factor in social development, economic progress has attracted full attention of policy makers in most countries of the world. However, some people suggest there are other factors that are as important as economic progress. This essay will focus on other aspects of the society that should be taken into consideration while measuring a country’s success.

(2) First and foremost, the success of a country is ultimately reflected by the well-being of the people. It is true that the growth of total social wealth leads to better lives for average people in general, but we cannot deny the fact that in some countries, wealth accumulates much faster in upper classes than in the working class. Sometimes, the gap is so wide that the poor ones actually become poorer with the currency inflation that appears along with economic growth. In other words, to ensure the healthy development of the society, economic progress should benefit everyone with a scientific distribution system.

(3) Besides, the success of a country relies on the all-round development of its younger generations. The cutting-edge scientific progress laying the path to a promising future is mostly driven by well-educated and innovative young people. For example, Mark Zackerburg, the founder of Facebook, successfully altered the online behaviour of hundreds and millions of netizens and made unprecedented contribution to the network industry. It is similar in other industries, which urges for better education and opportunities for each one.

(4) Last but not the least, a country should spare no effort to preserve its culture and traditions. For a nation, the culture identity and shared value system are essential to social stability. Only in a stable environment can the society thrive and provide sufficient space for the freedom of self-development for everyone.

(5) In conclusion, other than economic growth, the success of a country depends on various factors, among which the balanced development of all social classes plays the most important role.

(319 words)

First and foremost, ...

Last but not the least, ...

In most cities and towns, the high volume of road traffic has become a serious problem.

What are the causes of this situation?

What actions can be taken to solve the problem?

(1) With the ever-increasing speed of urban development, the volume of road traffic in most cities and towns has grown out of control. During the rush hour, buses and private cars are always trapped in the traffic congestion where people waste hours every day just because of the poor road condition. This essay will explore the causes of this situation and some possible actions that can be taken to solve this problem.

(2) To start with, the increasing number of private cars is the main cause of traffic jams. With the fast development of social economy, more citizens are able to afford private cars, which bring them great convenience. Instead of taking the sardine-packed buses or the metro to work, people now have the option to commute in their own cars. However, this new trend inevitably worsens the traffic.

(3) Another major cause of the high traffic volume is the over-population in large cities. Offering much more job opportunities with better career development, metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have attracted millions of people from other parts of the country. Unfortunately, the public transportation systems in the cities are comparatively under-developed and cannot support the booming population, which naturally results in the traffic problem.

(4) In order to alleviate the pressure on road traffic in towns and cities, the following suggestions should be taken into consideration. First of all, the government can discourage the citizens from owing and driving private cars by charging higher fees. In the meantime, the public transportation system should be upgraded so as to increase the total capacity. Moreover, the government can encourage the citizens to take buses or the metro to work by lowering the ticket prices.

(5) In conclusion, the over-crowding of city roads is the result of unbalanced urban development, which can be solved with the joint efforts of both the government and the average citizens.
