Our jobs and careers present many challenges, and we cannot solve all of these problems alone. No man has all the answers, and no man is an island. Becauseof this, when working on a team, all of the team members’ advice should be heard and considered before a supervisor makes a decision. A team should listen to the advice of its members because it produces good work performance and outcome, individuals all bring different perspectives and ideas to the table, and it brings a sense of equality among team members. First, a team leader should take advice from his or her team members simply because it is good for him or her to do so. If a leader or a team collective does not take advice or suggestions from the regular members of the group, it breeds dissatisfaction and contempt among the team. This hurts company morale, which in turn hurts production and can interfere with deadlines and other team goals. Further, if the team leader or supervisor only listens to the advice of a select few people, the performance will be interpreted as favoritism among the staff. The same problemswill follow.
Another reason—perhaps the most important of all—is that all people bring different perspectives and ideas to the table. No one employee has all the answers and anyone who says he or she could do is deluding himself or herself. Taking ideas from the individuals may result in the most revolutionary and money-making epiphany that the company has ever had. Or more commonly, if one person cannot solve an issue, perhaps one of his colleagues has had experience in this area and will have input on how to better deal with it. Taking ideas from the team members themselves is never a bad move.
Finally, taking suggestions from team members, no matter how silly or ill-informed those suggestions may be, provides a sense of equality among the staff. If thesupervisor or team leader listens to his or her team, the team members will feel useful, feel as if they have a friend in management, and feel equal among themselves. Equality between staff members creates a sense of security. My advice to any new manager or supervisor would be to look to their staff members. Looking to staff for suggestions and ideas can never hurt anyone, and will further shorten the division between team members and management.
Introduction 首段
